hey! i have a z650 that is going away for the winter....very sad day....

anyhows, i bought a battery tender jr...it says that if i take the battery out, which i have, i have to hook up a 24 inch, 6 gauge battery cable to the negative post...

though, watching people on youtube, they just seem to hook it up, neg to neg, and pos to pos

is this 6 gauge battery cable really necessary?

I honestly have no idea, usually just leave the battery as is and it hasn't failed me yet.

I would think the company knows best.. BUT I would guess if its NOT going to be where someone will check on it occasionally I would go with the thicker wire if to be left unseen for a long period of time just a precaution if it overheats

thanks guys! it is a sealed electrolyte battery, so from what im getting, it does not leak hydrogen when charging. therefore there should be no risk of a spark causing any sort of ignition.

here it goes! ill post if anything bad happens!

I think the battery tender jr works the same way as Optimate. You can plug it in for a whole week or more and not worry about it. It sends just enough juice to keep the battery alive during long periods without starting it. And to my knowledge, you don't even need to remove the battery from the bike. You can just hook it up to the terminate and you should be fine. The only reason you will want to remove the battery from the bike is if the place where you are storing it gets really cold (below 0 degree celsius)

All my bikes get the pig tails installed directly to the battery and if it's gonna sit a long time I just plug the tender in and forget about it. Been doing this for awhile, on cars too, and have zero issues.

Of course, I like to get the bike out at least once a month all year just to ride and keep things going.
