So, I have never owned a new bike before so this may sound a bit dense. Took off dealer temp tag to put on new plate that was mailed to me. The holes in the license bracket were way too close together to fit the plate. I had to drill 2 new holes in the plastic to mount it.

This typical? Anyone else have to do this?

Can you please share some photos for better understanding? I just don't get how come the license bracket can be too narrow for you.
