Why does the non-abs model have a rear wheel speed sensor (with a wire connected, next to brake caliper)? Does that mean the speedometer gets its signal from the rear wheel? That would be contrary to what Tremonte told me -- that the speedo is driven by the transmission's output shaft. It matters because a wheel-driven speedo would allow for changing of sprocket sizes without messing up the speedo's accuracy.

This is the first I've heard of the rear wheel speed sensor. The only place I can think of that will give us a definitive answer may be the service manual, but I don't have it.

It most likely is for ABS, even though you don't have the ABS system. By doing this, they are able to use the standard ECU and programming in all models without throwing an error code for missing or faulty wheel sensor.

It just dawned on me. Look to see if you have one on the front as well. If you don't, you may be on to something. If these single digit temperatures will go away, I can record my speed and RPM stock, then swap the sprockets and check again to see if it changed. That would be awesome if they have went with a rear wheel sensor vs the gear box. I don't know why they would have changed the setup from previous 650's though.

I have changed my rear sprocket from 46 teeth to 43 teeth. My RPM and speed meter report exactly as per gearing commander. For example at 6000 RPM gearing commander says my speed is 137.9 km/h. So when I rode my bike on level road maintain 6000 RPM my speed meter says 137~138. km/h.

So changing sprocket no issue. I believe only when changing the tire size (front or back ?) the speed meter will not be correct.

Only rear sensor

Responding to Tremonte, the non-ABS bike has a rear wheel speed sensor, BUT DOES NOT HAVE A FRONT SENSOR. So hurray for anyone who wants to change sprocket sizes without altering their speedometer accuracy!

Well, I happen to have new sprockets hanging on the wall that I purposefully held off installing due to how much it would throw off the speedometer. I had contacted several companies that make calibration devices, and went back and forth with one in particular. This could be the reason why one such device has not hit the market yet. I still find it odd they would completely change from the 2016 650 powerplant and gearbox, where the speed sensor has been for a long time, to solely a rear wheel sensor. Guess I'll do some testing once it warms back up some.

I changed to 14/46 and had an issue with Speedo pick ups reading differently. Set my check engine light off. The dealer was basically useless. Non-ABS model so Speedo healer doesn’t appear to be an option. Any ideas?
