Hello,

I am a new rider, just got my bike a few days ago :)

I am having problems controlling my throttle (keeping it smooth), so I have been mostly trying to stay in first and second gear and take it slow.

I am noticing that ~15KM/h, the bike is starting to sound like it needs to shift, but when I do, it again sounds like its struggling for the first little bit in 2nd gear!

My question is, when should I be shifting?

The dealer told me ~3000-4000 RPM, but I feel like this would be pushing it in terms of first gear.

Welcome. I was having problems with smooth shifting as well. Practice improved this a lot. Gear shifting is more of a "feel". Just like a car. But the manual does say to keep it under 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles.

Welcome to the forums first of all and congratulations on the bike. But like mentioned above, you're going to have to really feel it out. Practice makes perfect and you'll learn how your bike reacts to certain twists of the wrist and what not.

New motorcycle riders usually think that the engine is revving to much.
That is due to being used to car engines that usually operate at 2,000-3,000 RPMs
Motorcycle engines usually like operating at 5,000 and higher.
The first 500 miles is difficult becasue the company wants you to baby the engine.
After that you can use more RPMs as long as you don't keep the engine at those RPMs for a long time.

Ride safely, & enjoy

When I got my bike i rode it normally. Don't worry about limiting the RPM under 4000. I even push it to 10000 RPM in 3 gear for brief moments.

No need stay in 1st and 2nd gear.

!st gear just to get moving then immediately go to 2nd gear. Change gear at 4000 RPM. If RPM drop to 3000 or below downshift gear or increase throttle. At 2000 RPM you definitely have to downshift to lower gear.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I took it out for a ride yesterday and familiarized myself a bit more with the RPMs, engine braking, and acceleration.

I can feel myself getting smoother on the throttle, and not stalling as much :)

Feels good to make progress.

Sweet! That's all it is my friend, just get out there and keep practicing. It's the enjoyment of the ride and familiarizing yourself. Kind of a win-win when you think about it ;) If you could go out and practice around a place with a nice scenery, you'll have even more fun!
